Patrick’s Journey to Confidence, Skills, and Meaningful Employment
When Patrick first connected with Career Services of Brockville (CSB) in 2022, he was extremely shy, but his eagerness to work was unmistakable. He had limited experience beyond a Youth Job Connection (EEC) placement at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore. Through that early success, CSB recognized his potential—and together, began building a personalized employment journey grounded in his strengths, interests, and readiness.

Early in his journey, Patrick focused on learning workplace expectations such as productivity, safety and PPE use, and personal presentation. What quickly emerged were the qualities that would shape his future success: a strong work ethic, a positive attitude, and exceptional social skills. As part of his My Discovery (pre employment preparation) and My Action Steps (skill building) with CSB, Patrick engaged in more than 125 hours of person centred, individualized pre employment and employment supports. During this time, he also explored the world of work through CSB’s VjobReady, a Virtual Reality immersive training module that simulates hospitality tasks and point of sale functions. VjobReady gave Patrick an opportunity to build confidence in a realistic, low pressure environment while exploring new skills.

From there, Patrick gained hands on work experience through Career Services Industry Solutions (CS IS)—a social enterprise that not only financially supports CSB’s employment services, but also subsidizes Ready4Work, giving participants structured, supported first work experiences to help build confidence and strong résumés.

Patrick was hired to work on various Staffing Solutions partner sites —including Wills Transfer, 3M, and Shell. Through this experience he gained valuable exposure to real workplace demands. He strengthened his skills in teamwork, stamina, and task completion. With only brief on‑site coaching, he quickly became independent —consistently demonstrating maturity, reliability, and strong workplace habits. His consistency made him an exceptional ambassador for both Industry Solutions and CSB’s Employment Services.

Between his Industry Solutions assignments, Patrick engaged with his individualized job search support looking for opportunities that aligned with his interests. In the meantime, he happily accepted short‑term and seasonal roles. In a summer job at The Aquatarium, Patrick worked as a ropes course assistant; in this position he discovered that working in guest experience roles particularly meaningful. There, Patrick discovered his emerging ability and interest in working with and supporting youth—a strength recognized publicly when a visitor praised Patrick and his colleagues in a 5‑star Google review, describing the team as “encouraging and helpful throughout the (rope) course.”

Today, Patrick is thriving in a position that reflects both his strengths and the natural direction of his journey. As a Youth Recreation Instructor with the YMCA, he contributes to the Work Hard, Eat Well (WHEW) program, supporting youth aged 7–15 in developing healthy habits, teamwork skills, physical activity, and positive social engagement. Patrick describes the role as “rewarding,” and he feels deeply connected to his team, the youth, and the mission of the program.

Alongside his employment success, Patrick is thriving in his personal life. He has moved out of his family home and now lives independently in the community with his beloved girlfriend and their very spoiled cat, Tiger.

Patrick’s employment journey illustrates exactly what CSB’s Journey2Employment model is designed to do: offer personalized, skill‑building opportunities; provide realistic job trials; strengthen work habits; and empower individuals to step confidently into roles that reflect their strengths and aspirations. Through his determination—and with person‑driven support every step of the way—Patrick has grown into a reliable, confident, and capable employee making a meaningful impact in his community.

His story reflects both his personal dedication, and the transformative power of individualized specialized employment supports.
