Recent growth in the self-storage industry

According to Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) data, Ontario now has 37.3 million square feet of commercial self-storage space, which is the equivalent of the total ice surface of approximately 2,200 NHL rinks. In the last three years alone, more than 4.2 million square feet, an increase of about 11%, has been added to the storage footprint, with additional growth on the horizon.

 The development of new self-storage facilities in Mississauga, Toronto, and Ottawa has been particularly pronounced as those are the cities with the largest concentration of condos. Toronto now has more than eight million square feet of commercial self-storage space, followed by Ottawa with three million square feet and Mississauga with two million square feet.

Some of the most common self storage jobs include:

  • Facility Managers: Facility managers are responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the storage facility, which includes managing staff, maintaining the facility, and ensuring customer satisfaction. Facility managers also handle customer inquiries and concerns, set rental rates, and manage the marketing of the facility.
  • Accounting Specialist: Accounting specialists are responsible for managing the financial aspects of the storage facility, including managing accounts receivable and accounts payable, preparing financial reports, and ensuring compliance with financial regulations. Accounting specialists must have knowledge of accounting principles and be able to work independently.
