Summer Program:  A Change of Focus

Career Services involvement in area high schools

A major driving force behind shifting the focus of our Summer Program on students is a result of recognizing a need in the community. Our agency sees more and more kids leaving high school without any experience or idea of what is involved in the world of work, they have an unclear direction and limited knowledge of the services in the community at their fingertips, such as Career Services.  We want to create a connection with our local high schools to offer a glimpse into employment and develop a relationship with the students so that we could better serve them in the future.

Since 2010 we have partnered with area schools to assist with complementing curriculum and to draw from our experiences and knowledge about the world of work.  Job expectations workshops and employer panels were developed for in-class presentations.  We also coordinated tours of some of our business partners such as Proctor & Gamble and 3M where students were able to see first- hand some examples of jobs in the manufacturing sector.  These experiences have been advantageous to the student as it has given them a unique opportunity to learn beyond the curriculum by exposing them to the world of work and everything that it encompasses.

As a result of increased interaction with students we have seen more kids accessing or inquiring about our program.  Would these students have been aware of our services without direct involvement when in school? That question is debatable.  The tangible benefits we have seen aren’t debatable. Students are more comfortable with the supports we offer, understand who we are and what we are about, and most importantly transition directly to services when school is completed.  As a result of increased awareness and experience with an individual we are able to better serve their individual needs, thus we have created a winning partnership!

We learn by example and by direct experience because there are real limits to the adequacy of verbal instruction”
